Joy all around as the whole world was rooting for Argentina to win this major trophy after winning the hearts of the whole world with their magical football and tight bond of the squad. The final found Argentina facing the 2018 winners France, the clash of two stars as some may say, in a game certainly no one missed. This final had it all, world class players, goals one after another, goalkeeping masterclass and heroics from both sides.
When talking about that Argentina squad you can’t leave out their main man, Messi, amongst the greatest of all time captained his country towards their 3rd World Cup and his very first one after the last World Cup title being in 1986.
The first half of the final found Argentina 2-0 up with goals from Angel Di Maria and Lionel Messi, Messi’s last World Cup final game was his last and his successful penalty in the first half made him the first man to score in all five rounds of the tournament, a record only few could ever achieve. In the second half Mbappe choose right from the spot and closed the gap to 2-1 only to bring the game level 2 minutes later. Regular time ended in a draw after a heart-breaking second fans for the Argentinians, extra time was nail-biting, Argentina regain their lead after another Messi goal that brought the team back from the dead, the intensity remained high with France and Mbappe finding the back of the net once again, completing an impressive hat-trick to send the game to penalties.
With the whole world on the end of their seat, with goalkeeping heroics from Martinez that saved one penalty and with France sending one just a bit wide. The conclusion was inevitable, written in the stars, full of emotions of joy and heartbreak. Mbappe did his best and bagged a hat-trick but it was simply not enough, nothing and no one could take away the trophy from Lionel Messi’s hands, they waited, they fought, they never gave up and now they are on top of the world, where they well deserve to be.
