Film and fashion are intrinsically intertwined so it is unsurprising that many of us look to films for our fashion inspiration, with Marie Antoinette and The Devil Wears Para being two of the most influential movies for fashion.
Marie Antoinette truly was a style icon. Characterised by heavy floral print in a pastel colour scheme and adorned with frills, ribbons and bows galore. Unsurprisingly, the fashion of the 2006 movie does not disappoint. The gowns are decadent visual spectacles. Kirsten Dunst, who plays Marie, is embellished with luxurious silk gowns with large pannier skirts and matching elaborate hats.
The grandeur of the movie is perhaps a little difficult to recreate in real life, I’m not sure how well a ruffled ball gown would go down in the office or how practical it would be on your weekly food shop. However, this style has recently remerged in a much more accessible approach with the coquette aesthetic. Adding a simple ribbon to your hair, a few more frills or some cute pastels to your wardrobe this spring is a simple but effective way to pay homage to the elaborate fashion of Marie Antoinette and the movie. Marie Antoinette truly was the original coquette girly.
Another film bursting with fashion inspiration is The Devil Wears Prada. The movie begins with Andy Sachs heavily criticizing fashion as frivolous and superficial but throughout the movie we witness her metamorphoses into a fashion guru.
In the movie Andy really utilises accessories to elevate her style. Her iconic tweed cap paired with her layered Chanel charm necklace enhances her outfit and adds a slight quirk that truly makes the outfit stand out. This is also seen in the famous scene in which she throws her phone into a fountain in Paris and refuses to adhere to Miranda’s controlling ways anymore. Her black silk gloves and red lip add new dimensions to the outfit and really make it memorable. This is easy style tip to incorporate into your wardrobe; never underestimate the power of adding accessories.
These two iconic films are only the tip of the iceberg for fashion inspiration so if you feel like your wardrobe is lacking lately maybe pop on a film or two.
