On the 6th of October, 18-year-old Moto3 driver David Alonso was crowned champion after an outstanding rookie campaign. With more than 100 points separating him and Daniel Holgado, second in the standings, the Colombian rider made history as he was the first from his nation to win a World Championship.
After impressing everyone during his rookie years, nobody was surprised to see him make his Moto3 debut before his 18th birthday. From the first moment we saw him riding, we knew he would be a strong contender for the championship.
At the beginning of the season, several MotoGP drivers, like former world champions Pecco Bagnaia and Fabio Quartararo, appointed the young driver as the favourite to take the championship home. Even with this pressure added, the Colombian delivered one of his best seasons yet.
Achieving more than ten podiums in the past 16 races, 8-time world champion Marc Márquez admitted to being “in love” with Alonso’s driving style. He stated that “he is the kind of driver that goes fast and is super talented”. He also confessed that he would like to see him in MotoGP in a couple of years as he could potentially be a “better champion in the future”.
David Alonso is not the only rookie who has caught the attention of the fans. Spanish driver Pedro Acosta is having one season to remember. After winning Moto3 and Moto2, he debuted in MotoGP with GASGAS Factory Racing Tech3. He has achieved the title of “Rookie of the Year” after ending up four times on the podium with big names like Jorge Martín, the current leader of the championship.
These are not the only names that have been mentioned regarding whether the future of MotoGP is insured. Rising talents Fermín Aldeguer, Alonso López, Jaume Masiá, José Antonio Rueda and Deniz Öncü have been in the eye of the press. More and more young drivers have been selected to race with the best in the world, so we can assure you that the future of MotoGP looks bright.
