As popular as road trips are and their ability to give travellers freedom and flexibility, with the current price of fuel and rental car hire soaring many are looking for alternatives.

Marrakech, Morocco

The densely packed walled city home to mosques, palaces and gardens is a popular destination for a car free holiday as there is accessibility by food through the ancient maze-like city which still houses souks and traditional markets. Regular public buses and tourist sightseeing buses are available in Morocco rather than a hot stuffy car. Walking around morrocoy may entitle you to see some of t=its less popular gems hidden within the ancient walls.

Venice, Italy

With no roads passing through the centre of Venice just an uncountable number of bridges and gondoliers, it is one of the most pedestrian friendly cities in the world. The floating city’s striking architecture and 120 small connecting islands can be discovered wholly on foot.

Oslo, Norway

Many central parts of Oslo are traffic-free making the compact city even more walkable. With affordable and impressive public transport including metros, trams, buses, boats and trains proving you are not limited to exploring Oslo’s mountains and fjords without a car. 

San Francisco, United States

As one of the most expensive cites in the US car rental is a write off for many with high prices and chaotic traffic the city has more ideal ways of exploring the city. The steep hills of San Francisco can be unforgiving on foot and tiring if trying to fit the city’s sights into a couple of days, the city’s historic cable cars are a unique and quick way to dot around SF. 

Rottnest Island, Australia 

Who would want to see the picturesque Rottnest island through the windscreen of a car? The island in Australia home to the Instagram famous quokka is a car free island which many will thank it for as it keeps the views uncongested and noise free. The best way to explore by bike that can be hired on the island and by boat which also offers a chance to see whales. 

As well as more eco-friendly and sustainable way to travel it also offers less stress and admit then a hire car. On your next trip challenge yourself to go car free, it’ll save your wallet as well as help protect the environment.
