British tennis star Emma Raducanu regrettably had to retire from the ATX Open in Austin, Texas last month as she was suffering with tonsilitis. The 20-year-old now wants to focus on her health and body in the lead up to the French open in May.
This is Raducanu’s second setback this year, after an injured ankle during the Australian Open in January saw her only get as far as two matches, when she lost to American player Coco Gauff.
The Canada-born player is currently world No. 81 according to Women’s Tennis Association, a significant drop from her career-high ranking of world No. 10 in July 2022. She is now at risk of falling outside of the top 100, which threatens her place in Wimbledon this July.
Raducanu is still British women’s No.1 since her Grand Slam win at the 2021 US Open, in which she became the first British woman to win a Grand Slam title since Virginia Wade in the 1977 Wimbledon tournament.
Her next tournament is the prestigious Indian Wells Masters in California, which started last week. She was originally entered as a wildcard but is now in the main draw as players above her ranking have dropped out.
Hopefully Raducanu can gain momentum again in this next event.
