Their first match was against Scotland on 4th February, which is always a tense moment for fans as they’re also playing for the Calcutta cup. It was important to start the season strong, as its been two years since fans have been able to watch the games in the stadiums. Unfortunately the cup isn’t on England soil this year, as Scotland took the win 29-23. Borthwick made a big call this game, making no place in his team for Manu Tuilagi, however the familiar faces of Owen Farrell as captain and Marcus Smith made their presence known on the pitch.
Their second game was against Italy, again on home turf at Twickenham. Italy has come a long way since the last six nations, making their game against France a tense watch. Italy are usually overlooked in rugby, however their defence tested the England team enough to make fans nervous. England thankfully won this game, 31-14 being the first win of Borthwick’s era, and moving them from the bottom of the table.
On 25th February, the game that makes all rugby fan excited was played. England VS Wales is my personal favourite game to watch, even if a lot of the time is spent with my head in my hands. Thankfully, England smashed this game winning 10-20 taking them up to third on the table and leaving Wales at the bottom. The game was stolen by Ollie Lawrence who got a try in 75th minute letting England fans believe the game was ours.
England fans cant get too comfortable, with England playing France on 11th March. France haven’t been playing their best season this year, with them being fourth on the table. However, their defence is looking as strong as ever, something England fall short of most games they play against the team. Hopefully, with Borthwicks help, the team will be ready to go and keep their positions at 3rd on the table.
