“Only the best pair of tights EVER”. If anything gets this reaction out of an adult, then it is probably the key to happiness. I don’t make the rules. Or I could, and I will in this article.

There is a specific feeling of childishness that you search for the moment you become an adult. For me, the need is quenched by funky tights. Wearing or seeing, I should say. Seeing someone wearing bumblebee tights, blue, pink, green or patterned ones instantly showers me with nostalgia.

Over the winter break, my sister and I went through family albums, looking for pictures with our grandma but secretly keeping an eye for the ugliest baby pictures of each other. But what we found was even better (actually, not much can trump the videos of my sister saying hello to teddy bears for two minutes). What I found was a cheerful child in the funkiest tights ever. If it had lines, hearts, crosses or sparkles, it was mine. And I looked the happiest ever. That might have had to do with my state of unawareness with the disastrous state of the world. But this is the fashion and beauty section so we won’t mention it.

More than an opportunity to be fun and colourful, I think it can also be a statement about freedom of clothes and loving oneself.

It was nostalgia but also envy. In Me Before You (2016), the tights showed a person that made choices for herself, that knew what she wanted and didn’t care about other people’s opinion. More than an opportunity to be fun and colourful, I think it can also be a statement about freedom of clothes and loving oneself.

Recently, as I have been reconnecting with my personal wishes, somehow leading me back to my younger self, I have felt the need for funky tights. My graduation present to myself will be to buy burgundy and lacy red tights. After that, my outfits will never miss.
