Lulu Blundell was a student at Newcastle University and started with me in 2021. She studied English Language for her first year. When she was 15 years old she was diagnosed with cancer. She went through chemo and had her leg amputated because of it and on January 20th 20202 she was announced cancer free. Mid last year, Lulu’s worst fears came true and her cancer returned. This was a huge shock to everyone around her and of course the most heartbreaking news for her family and friends.

Lulu was given 3-6 months to live and despite all the odds and in true Lulu fashion, she fought hard to the very end and tirelessly went out of her way to raise money for the Teenage Cancer Trust - a charity that has been there for Lulu and the people she loved from the very start. With one leg, a terminal illness and the most inspiring determination Lulu organised a 5k run at her old rugby club in Sheffield, originally planning to raise £5000. On Lulu’s Just Giving page, linked on her Instagram profile, she is now at just over £22,000 and collectively with all her family and friends, almost £100,000 has been raised.

Lulu was one of the best people I will ever meet. She was loving, compassionate and would unapologetically stick up for the people that she cared about. She was never afraid to say or act how she wanted to and although towards the end of her life she was adamant that after all she was not someone inspiring and just a regular teenage girl, I can say for certain that she has changed the way so many of us go about life today, including myself.

Lulu passed on January 1st 2023 and since then her family and friends have taken on a variety of different fundraising activities from skydiving to the Tough Mudder to raise money for The Teenage Cancer Trust. I, myself, will be running the London Marathon in April and I have a target of £2000. I am currently at just over £1000 and am deep into my training. Having never before my training really run more than 10k, this felt quite daunting. However, having joined many marathon training groups it’s very comforting to see people feeling the same way and in the same boat as me.

The day for me will be a way of honouring Lulu and the charity that did so much for my best friend, who was very moved when she found out I was running the marathon before she passed. I would like to raise as much money as possible for this reason and so any donation (no matter how small!) would be hugely appreciated. To donate all you have to do is go to the JustGiving website and type in ‘Imogen Lily’. My profile with the ‘London Marathon 2023’ written just below should come up.
