The Newcastle University Gymnastics team won overall champions on day 2 of the event, with athletes medalling across all levels giving Newcastle their first Varsity win of the event. In the Novice category, Elizabeth Meade took bronze on floor, beam, vault and overall events. In Intermediate, performances were equally as strong from the gymnasts.
Will Gillis placed 3rd in the overall category, as well as on vault. Gillis took the gold on beam, with teammate Taylor Ingham winning bronze on the event as well as bronze on floor. Taking silver on the bars was Cat Tan against Northumbria University counterparts.
Performance was especially strong in the Advanced category, which saw the team from Newcastle place across all events in every position.
Milly Rabaiotti placed first in the overall category, followed by teammates Evie Walker (2nd) and Rachel Hilton (3rd). Rabaiotti also took 1st position on bars, followed by Rachel Hilton and Evie Walker in 3rd.
Evie Walker led the team on vault, with Olivia Clark-Neufville placing 2nd and Rabaiotti taking the bronze. Felicity Crompton secured gold for the team on beam, with Walker taking silver and Clark-Neufville securing bronze. This strong performance continued on floor, which saw Rabaiotti taking gold, Hilton taking silver and Walker in 3rd position.
Taking place on the final day of Varsity was squash, which saw Newcastle's Mens 1 and Womens 1 Team go up against the team from Northumbria University. Both teams saw strong performances throughout the matches and brought home another win for Team Newcastle on the final day of the event.
The men's team defeated Northumbria with a final score of 4-1 in a team comprised of Robert Mitchell, Ross Jowsey, Daniel Sarkisson, James Knowlson and Ben Gibson. The women's team (Martha Buczkowska, Kate Maxwell-Armstrong and Erin Vitty) also came out on top, securing a win with a score of 3-2.
For both the men's and women's team, the final day of Varsity brought major wins home for Newcastle. Both teams defeated Northumbria opposition with an outstanding score of 6-0. Newcastle's tennis teams have had a strong performance throughout the season which has undoubtedly prepared them for such stellar play during varsity.
Women's netball at Newcastle have already established how great they are, so it came as no surprise that all 6 teams defeated the teams at Northumbria University. W1 led the series of victories with a close score of 61-54 at Northumbria University's Sports Central, with W2 also coming out on top with a score of 59-28. Newcastle's W3 beat Northumbria with an impressive 69-35 and W4 with a score of 56-31. W5 and W6 were also on exceptional form, defeating the Northumbria team with scores of 58-30 and 52-25 respectively.
Both of the Newcastle University Women's Rugby teams put in exceptional efforts against the team at Northumbria University. For the 1XV, an unfortunate loss resulted. However, Lythgoe, Fairbank and Morgan each scored a try for Newcastle, bringing the final score to 15-50 to Northumbria.
The 2XV team scored a major win, defeating the team from Northumbria 36-17. Howard scored 3 tries for Newcastle and 3 cons, with additional tries scored by Longhurst, Clemens and Power.
