'Hope Not Heat' events to be hosted on campus!

Hope Not Heat, an event centred around raising awareness for how students can get involved in the fight against human-caused climate change, is coming to Newcastle and Northumbria campuses!

On the 25th and 26th of February, there'll be six exciting free events that any student can attend. From comedy sets to documentary screenings, to how you can join campaigning to save our planet, Hope Not Heat has something for everyone! Read on to see what's on, when and where.

EVENTS AT NEWCASTLE UNIVERSITY:

  • Stand-up comedy set: 5:30 pm on 25th February @ Curtis Auditorium, Herschel Building
    • A hilarious and informative stand-up set performed by climate scientist Dr Matt Winning, author of 'Hot Mess' (free tickets required, book here).
  • Model United Nations Society 'COP' style session: 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm on 26th February @ Merz Court, either L202 or L301
    • A fun session for anyone interested in politics, debate, or diplomacy to get to grips with the complexities of climate policy on the global stage.
  • Environment and Earth Society talk on climate anxiety and green careers: 3:30 pm to 4:15 pm on 26th February @ Merz Court, either L202 or L301
    • A very informative chat covering student concerns about climate change and green careers that students can pursue after graduating.
  • Plant-Based Universities campaign discussion: 4:15 pm to 5:00 pm on 26th February @ Merz Court, either L202 or L301
    • An insightful discussion on the Plant-Based Universities campaign at Newcastle so far, presented by Campaign Coordinator Ella Spray, including a brief address from the NUSU Ethics & Environment Rep.

EVENTS AT NORTHUMBRIA UNIVERSITY (Open to Newcastle students):

  • Carbon Capture in Soils: The Answer to Limiting Climate Change is Under Our Feet: 2:30 pm on 26th February @ Stage 2, Northumbria University Students' Union
    • An enthralling presentation from a member of One Planet on how we can utilise the ground beneath us to 'store potentially millions of metric tonnes of CO2 annually.'
  • Screening of 2040: 5:15 pm on 26th February @ Stage 2, Northumbria University Students' Union
    • An optimistic Australian documentary by Damon Gameau: '2040 maps out a pathway for change that can lead us to a more ecologically sustainable and equitable future.'
