The clocks are set to go an hour forward on the 29th of March, bringing in the longer evenings we have all been waiting for. Despite being known for its Northern chill, Newcastle has recently blessed us with some sunny days, giving us a taste of what’s to come. But this comes with the question, how do I spend this extra time?

Luckily, the city has endless options for those evenings when you’re stuck on what to do and where to go. Undoubtedly, the first step is to get outside. Make the most of the light whilst it’s here! There are many ways to do this.

First, and maybe a popular choice, but, pop over to the beach. Force a group of friends to get the 30-minute metro to Tynemouth or Whitley Bay, pick up some snacks from Tynemouth Co-op or maybe a fish'n chips from the popular ‘Longsands Fish Kitchen’, and spend your evening enjoying the company (the seagulls) and the sea air.

I get the urge to enjoy all my meals outside, something which isn’t the easiest as a student, especially if you’re in halls.

Second, and my personal choice would be a picnic dinner. As soon as the sun is out and the days are longer, I get the urge to enjoy all my meals outside, something which isn’t the easiest as a student, especially if you’re in halls.

But you shouldn’t let that stop you. Make and pack your food up and head to your nearest park. Whilst this is nice to do with friends, it can be equally as nice to enjoy alone. From Leazes Park to Jesmond Dene, there are plenty of local spots to enjoy.

Recognisably, April and May aren’t the most relaxing months as a university student. Sadly, work is sometimes going to stand in the way of making the most of the longer evenings.

But there are definitely ways to work around this. So, for my third suggestion...I believe there is zero shame in heading to a pub garden and locking in for a couple of hours. Who knows... maybe a flow of pints will increase the quality of your work?

Or maybe even just finding a bench to sit on is more your style.

Don’t let work get in the way of you making the most of the sunlight!

Whatever you do... make the most of this amazing city whilst daylight savings gives us the blessing of more time!
