Personally, I can’t wait for this academic year to be over and assignments to be handed in. I know I’m not the only one who feels incredibly burnt out after this year, feeling like I’ve constantly been sat staring at my laptop screen. We’ve all been dreaming of the summer break - drinking cocktails in the sun and not thinking about anything intellectually challenging for a while. In this way, I think the length of the summer break is necessary. I certainly need longer to give my brain a rest, but also to save up financially again for third year. Realistically, I will spend my entire summer serving customers and running around the shop floor tidying up after people … but it’s the perfect opportunity to keep busy and earn some more money before coming back in September. But most of all, holidays have to be the best part of summer. That feeling when the heat hits you as you step off the plane is one I’ve been craving for way too long…
Although I can’t wait for the academic year to be over, part of me does wish that summer was shorter, as it makes it so much harder to adjust back to university life again the following year. Starting a new academic year can be overwhelming, which is only heightened by the length of the summer break. Having done nothing over summer, trying to get yourself up for a 9am lecture is a gruelling task.
Ultimately, I have mixed feelings about the long summer break. After feeling academically burnt out, I can’t wait to enjoy summer. However, I dread to think how hard it will be coming back, especially as I am heading into my final year.
