Whether in search for an Lgbt community safe space, or simply wanting to check out your local queer-owned businesses, Newcastle boasts an expansive list of places to support and enjoy. This list includes all independently run, queer-owned businesses; such as places to eat, bookshops and even hair salons.

Searching for a queer-owned place to eat?

The Tipsy Cow:

Located on Blandford Street, this queer-owned bar and restaurant notably celebrates the lgbt community. The Tipsy Cow’s menu consists of classics such as: homemade burgers and beef dogs, chicken wings, smaller ‘light bite’ plates and much more. But if that wasn’t enough to make you want to visit, the bar hosts bottomless brunch every Saturday from 11-2, where you will be served by ‘Outrageous drag queens,’ and even get unlimited Prosecco! A perfect spot for a quick bite of food or a chaotic bottomless brunch, the Tipsy Cow welcomes everyone.

Pink Lane coffee:

Open seven days a week, Pink Lane Coffee is based just across from Newcastle’s Central Station. The café offers a wide range of ethically sourced, freshly roasted in-house coffee, along with a full café menu that includes options for vegans, vegetarians, and those with Gluten allergies. Dogs are also welcome, and you are even encouraged to bring them! From the extensive menu and high-quality coffee, down to the trendy, rustic interior, this queer- owned café is certainly one to add to your bucket list.

Wanting to support independent, queer-owned bookshops?

1B books:

1B Books is a queer- owned, independent bookshop located in Newcastle. Not only is the selection of books here brilliant and inclusive of all genres, ages, sexualities and genders, but the shop also hosts many different events. These include: lgbtq+ pride events, a queer and neurodiverse book club, a YA and kids book club, and much more. The independent bookshop even welcomes authors for exclusive book signings, and just recently hosted a small performance by pop singer Maisie Peters. This small, queer-owned bookshop is full of personality, and a perfect place for everyone to visit and support.

Olive's book club:

Olive’s book club (OBC)  is a queer, one-woman-owned business in the heart of Newcastle Upon Tyne. The shop sells a wide variety of fiction and non-fiction books, with the sole aim of sharing the stories and voices of those who are marginalised; OBC creates a powerful community of activism in Newcastle, through reading and education. The independent bookshop’s website highlights some different genres that the shop has to offer, including: ‘Fiction Favourites,’ ‘Indie press picks,’ ‘Poetry, Prose and essays,’ ‘Queer YA,’ and much more.
