Whether it’s reading with a cup of hot chocolate, wrapped up in bed, or the freezing trek to class, I think we’re all in need of some cosy tunes. So as someone who listens to acoustic songs year-round, let me try and persuade you to give my favourites a try. (Full disclosure: I refuse to listen to Mariah Carey just yet, my apologies)
'February' - Matilda Mann
Matilda's voice gives me a blend of dodie and Billie Eilish on this whispery and fuzzy track. Despite the quiet melancholy in the lyrics, it's a lovely, mellow track with harmonies that wrap you up like a blanket.
'just like you' - Annika Rose
Also a sad song, but I love the melody so much, it has to be on my playlist. 'just like you' was written after a fight with singer Annika’s mother when she was 15, and reflects on their relationship. It’s the chorus of 'Just Give Me a Reason' with a softer tone but still stunning vocals.
'Nonsense' - Sabrina Carpenter
An easy listen, 'Nonsense' is catchy, fun and a regular on my walking playlist. And I can’t lie, the best part is probably the last verse, and if you choose to give 'Nonsense' a listen, the real gems are the clips of her ad-libbed outros on her tour.
'Flight Risk' - Tommy Lefroy
This track, from the duo comprised of Tessa Mouzourakis and Wynter Bethel, is short but effortlessly beautiful. Its harmonies are captivating and although short, is definitely worth a listen if you’re a fan of cool vocals.
'Can’t Wait to Be Pretty' - Cate
This song is delicate and ironically soothing, a soft tune to have on in the background. Cate’s voice is perfect on the track as well, with lyrics that are so real. Although this was released almost two years ago, 'Can’t Wait to Be Pretty' hasn’t lost its charm.
'Lonely Bones' - dodie
A number with a rhythm that makes me want to sway, it vaguely reminds me of 'Chiquitita'. With dodie's signature harmonies and whimsical feel, 'Lonely Bones' is a juxtaposition of loneliness and layered voices. It’s the third track on dodie’s newest EP Hot Mess, which in my opinion, is worth listening to the entirety of. (My favourite dodie song is also 'I Kissed Someone (It Wasn’t You)', so do with that information what you will)
