Northumbria Police’s chief constable Vanessa Jardine has made a statement explaining that the public must be able to trust the police force. This comes after a series of events involving the national police which have called their reliability into question.

Jardine labelled the police officers who have been dismissed ‘a very small number’, for which there is no room in the police force. She continued, ‘Northumbria Police were already doing an awful lot of work to tackle those behaviours and we will continue to do that’.

The chief constable took up the role in March after her position as deputy chief constable at West Midlands Police.

Continuing on her commitment to identify rogue officers, she said: ‘I am very clear on the standards of behaviour that I expect of police officers and staff here.

‘People will hear me talk about that all the time. The vast, vast majority of people do an absolutely brilliant job.’

Jardine then went on to talk about how she plans to tackle youth knife crime

Jardine then went on to talk about how she plans to tackle youth knife crime, detailing the need ‘to get into schools, talk to [young people], educate them, understand why they feel the need to carry a knife in the first place.’
