By 2027, the investment will be used for projects like the construction of a new North Shields Ferry Landing, smart ticketing on the Metro, and 100km of infrastructure for bicycles and pedestrians, according to Mayor Kim McGuinness.
The initial investment is the first stage of a substantial capital project worth £800M that will be implemented over the course of the following three years in order to revitalise the network and enhance public transport and active travel for everyone.
McGuinness has stated that the funds are intended to create a public transportation system that is safer, more accessible, and interlinked. Including plans for new gatelines to be installed throughout the Metro network, which she said will make the area safer for women and girls in particular.
Additionally, safety and accessibility improvements will be made to bus stops and £15.8M will be spent on implementing 1,000 electric vehicle charging stations in residential areas. Along with an extra £21.7M set aside for road repairs in the upcoming fiscal year.
The scheme plans to bring County Durham specifically into line with the other six local authorities and into the region's primary transport financing program by receiving £23M in funding.
The region's transport network has long suffered from ageing infrastructure and public congestion. This £200M investment is crucial to modernise the system, increase accessibility, and satisfy the growing demand for more environmentally friendly and efficient transport options.
