The book itself was shortly published, alongside Northanger Abbey, after Austen’s death. Just under 200 years later, the first adaptations of Austen’s novel came to light. Then in 1995 an adaptation was produced starring the likes of Amanda Root (Anne Elliot), Fiona Shaw (Mrs. Croft) and Sophie Thompson (Mary Musgrove). These actresses alone suggest the new film has a lot to live up to.
It is difficult to find the 1995 production; however, I have been able to site it on YouTube. Maybe this upcoming film will relight the flames of Netflix and other streaming companies to place 1995 Persuasion back on the map.
Meanwhile, the 2022 film has lived up to expectations with its casting choice of Dakota Johnson (Anne Elliot), Cosmo Jarvis (Captain Frederick Wentworth) and Richard E. Grant. Such big names surely allude to this being a successful production!
With a successful production comes a successful trailer, which this production certainly has done. The costumes and sets look phenomenal - as though they have just come out of 1819 themselves - and they only make you want to watch the entire film to look for more of the incredible details the designers have given us. Though there does appear to be a modern twist that can be felt as you watch the trailer - all will become clear when you watch it!
It should be stated that this film will be released on Netflix; therefore, anything can be expected. Netflix has seen the success of Bridgerton and Emma so it only makes sense they make Persuasion, right?
