Netflix brought this fantastic new animated movie to the screens on November 22nd and it promised to be a great watch for all of the family. This movie certainly has a star-studded cast, with Rachel Zegler playing the main character of Princess Ellian and actors such as Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem cast as side roles.
Each character was carefully crafted to be interesting and complex in a way that appealed to both adults and children. Ellian, particularly, displays courage and bravery as she attempts to hold her family together. She keeps a positive front for most of the movie until she eventually breaks down, demonstrating that everyone can have big emotions, especially in matters such as divorce and separation. By the end of the film, Vicky Jenson cleverly indicates that, even despite the separation of families, the story can end happily, something that many children and parents will be able to relate to.
Despite being released by Netflix, it would be easy to assume this is a Disney film. The strong female protagonist mirrors several of their most recent heroines such as Mirabel and Asha, all of who are forced to undergo a journey alone to save their kingdom and family. The incredible music by Alan Menken, who also wrote scores for The Little Mermaid, Tangled and Beauty and the Beast, would indicate this too.
Despite this underrated movie not receiving the attention that it would have had it been a Disney film, it is a heartwarming and moving story. The soundtrack of the movie is certainly a highlight and you may find yourself singing along to the catchy songs during and after the film.
This touching and uplifting movie was an enjoyable watch and I would give it a strong four-star rating. This PG animation can offer a positive and relatable view for both children and parents, making it a must-watch before the end of the year.
