Taking place on Friday the 17th of October was the iconic and must-do university experience of the Newcastle races. This is the place where thousands of university students flock, ready to spend way more money than they should, but then again, it’s the races I suppose that’s what its for…

....trying to get on those buses whilst hundreds of semi-drunk university students try and shove their way on is not really ideal so I recommend pre-booking Ubers.

There is lots to unpack about this cultural experience but first I think we should turn our attention to the travel. Its safe to say you should probably pre-book Ubers or taxis the day before, it can be pretty hectic trying to arrange transport if you haven’t bought a ticket that includes a bus. Even then trying to get on those buses whilst hundreds of semi-drunk university students try and shove their way on is not really ideal so I recommend pre-booking Ubers. It definitely saved me and my friends the stress of getting there and cost us each around a fiver, which is not to bad! As for the way back you’re probably looking at a half an hour wait for Ubers, unless you have a bus pass, but hey it’s part of the experience remember.

Let’s turn our attention to the food, drinks and prices. Now the races isn’t exactly a budget friendly day out, however I was surprised at some of the deals they had to offer. My personal favourite was the 2-for-12 cocktails, I got a raspberry lemonade and a pornstar martini, and I have to say the raspberry cocktail was my favourite it had a perfect level of sweetness but made sure you knew they hadn’t missed the alcohol… After a few delicious cocktails it was time for food where I got some chicken nuggets and chips for £9.90, slightly expensive I will admit but did the job nonetheless.

....with some exceptional outfits and photographs flying the atmosphere of High Gosforth did not disappoint.

But most importantly the atmosphere, with some exceptional outfits and photographs flying the atmosphere of High Gosforth did not disappoint. Albeit, sometimes cold spirits were high, quite literally, and the students of Newcastle and Northumbria filled the park with laughter and smiles whilst the betting men and woman sunk their money into chances of winning big!
