Wellies: Yay or Nay?

Can wellies be fashionable or do they deserve to stay stuck in the mud?

Wellies - either a beloved winter staple or a dreaded necessity for those cold, gloomy and wet winter mornings that we know all too well up here. As practical as they are, it is hard to deny that wellies are a hit or miss. But they don’t have to be, I say yay to wellies!

It is undeniable that some wellies can be an eye sore. However, I beg to differ - style and practicality do not have to be mutually exclusive.

A classic black welly, or even a wine red, would be perfect for the cosy season.

Naturally, the first question may be how to style a welly in a way that doesn’t make you feel like you’re gardening or gearing up to splash around in muddy puddles. When considering this, the glaring issue is the colours that they come in. However, a classic black welly, or even a wine red, would be perfect for the cosy season.

Classic autumnal colours can mute the welly, making it fit more seamlessly into everyday wear. Alternatively, in an accent colour, the wellies become the focal point. Either way, instead of sticking out they can actually complement and upgrade your wardrobe.

Now, if finding the wellies is an issue, thrifting or second-hand apps like Vinted, eBay and Depop can make them even easier and cheaper to incorporate – there’s so many options and for a fraction of the price. I’m keeping an eye out for a steely blue pair as we speak.

When weighing up the welly, it's clear that they’re perfect for the winter. They're waterproof, which is essential but can still be very cute if you make them so. In wellies, your feet are dry, warm and you look cool - if I do say so myself. They act as a slight revamp of the timeless classic that is the knee-high boot. Whether that be with a pair of fuzzy knee-high socks or under a baggy pair of jeans; they are so versatile!
