The dreaded lunchtime gap between lectures. Even worse, on a Monday. With nothing to eat, my friend and I went in search of something cheap, tasty, quick and different – Grainger Market was the obvious choice, which is when we came across Bao Down.
Their whole menu sounded lush, but the loaded fries were what reeled me in. I got the teriyaki chicken fries, my friend the chicken katsu curry ones, and we were both blown away by the flavours and the portions. The fries were fresh, crispy and piping hot, perfectly complimented by the sweet and salty teriyaki sauce and tender chicken. Garnished with crispy onions, spring onions and sesame seeds, both items looked the part as well as tasting amazing. For £8.75 each we got our money’s worth, and both felt stuffed afterwards! From an aesthetic and logistical standpoint, we couldn’t fault the eatery either. Although a street food vendor, like many stalls in Grainger market, Bao Down had a few comfortable tables within the outlet and a modern, clean design, with quick and friendly service from owner Alex.
I think this small business deserves to take a ‘bao’
Whilst I have even been back since and tried the Korean BBQ pork loaded fries (which were just as tasty and good value for money!) I will certainly be returning to try their signature bao buns, any two of which from the menu you can get for less than a tenner. Although I am not vegetarian or vegan myself, Bao Down also offers tasty-sounding tofu options, making it a well-rounded place for all customers wanting a quick taste of Asia.
All in all, I think this small business deserves to take a ‘bao’ and is certainly worth a visit; whether you are looking for a unique weekday lunch like me, or just fancy popping by during your shopping, Bao Down is your place, open 10am-5pm every Monday-Saturday in Grainger Market!
