It was assumed that Liverpool had returned to their very best a few years ago, with the Reds winning the Premier League and Champions League across two seasons. Klopp’s side also came close to the title last season, with Manchester City pipping them to it on the last day of the season.
It’s all come unstuck this season however, with Liverpool languishing in mid table after a very poor run of form. The club are also out of both domestic cup competitions, with the Champions League being the only tournament left that they stand a chance of winning.
An ageing, out of form squad has really found the Premier League difficult this season, with players like Fabinho, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil Van Dijk all being shadows of their former selves. The sides new signings have also struggled, with Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo also failing to make their mark on the Premier League. Their midfield has also come under particular scrutiny at times, with it performing much poorer since the departure of Georginio Wijnaldum.
Klopp has appeared increasingly stressed in both interviews and on the touchline this season, with many saying this season’s failures have echoed those seen in his final year of managing Borussia Dortmund. While Liverpool have claimed that they won’t sack him mid-season, it’s becoming increasingly likely that he will be leaving come the end of the season.
There has been a proposed overhaul of the squad due to happen in the Summer, with players such as Matheus Nunes and Jude Bellingham both linked in an attempt to revitalise Liverpool’s squad. This overhaul may very well include a new manager and with Klopp being an option for many other club's managerial positions, it wouldn’t shock many if he jumped ship this summer.
