NUSU staff worked quickly and efficiently to ensure the safety of fair vendors and attendees, and all staff are looking forward to welcoming students back to the fair on Thursday.
The Student’s Union posted an apology on their Instagram story, stating that “Due to unforeseen circumstances out of our control, the Freebie Fair has been cancelled for the rest of the day… The SU is closed as well, we’re so sorry for any inconveniences.”
The Student’s Union Freebies Fair is a mainstay of Newcastle University’s early year social calendar. It comes around just twice a year, heralding the beginning of a new semester and promising to deliver “goods from some of the biggest brands across the city and beyond,” often involving games, giveaways, and, of course, freebies. Naturally, the event tends to draw massive crowds, with queues on Wednesday stretching over 100m from Venue, where the fair takes place, to the Percy Building.
The power cut began at 12:50 and has affected the entire Student’s Union building, meaning that Luther’s Bar and the Co-op will remain closed until the issue is resolved. Plans are in place to re-open the Freebies Fair 10am-4pm on Thursday, with early entry tokens given to queueing students outside the SU.
